PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI Latch Replacement

Description: Latch mechanism located in the upper case.

Steps:

  1. Locate the battery release tab on the underside of the G4.
  2. Slide the battery release tab to the left and lift the battery out of the computer.

  4. Remove the seven T8 Torx screws from the lower case.
  5. Using your thumbs, slide the lower case toward the front of the computer.
  6. The lower case may stick in the front on a tab just above the center of the optical drive. Be careful as you work the case off, or you may break the thin strip of plastic just above the drive.
  7. Lift the lower case off.

  9. Disconnect the hard drive ribbon from the logic board using a spudger or the tip of your finger.

  11. To free the hard drive, remove the two T8 Torx screws from the right wall of the battery housing.

  13. Remove the hard drive by lifting the left edge up and out of the computer.
  14. There are four rubber bumpers that fit over the hard drive screws. Ensure that these bumpers come out when you remove the hard drive.

  16. Your laptop should look approximately like this.

  18. Use your thumbnails to push in and then lift the two fingers of the latch clip over the restraining bar.

  20. Now use your index fingers' nails to pull at the "elbows" of the clip, rotating it upward approximately 90 degrees, or until the latch pops out

  22. Insert the new latch by rotating the clip up and pushing the latch into place. Then rotate the clip back down, pushing in at the area where the clip bends around the latch. Make sure to insert the clip fingers back into their slots.
